Main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will win at least 58 seats in the upcoming parliamentary elections, says former president and party leader Mohamed Nasheed.
Reiterating his support for MDP’s Thimarafushi constituency candidate at a campaign rally on Friday, Nasheed emphasized that there are no “government” candidates, describing any such assertions as “folklore.”
“We will win at least 58 or 59 seats out of the 86 seats [in the parliamentary elections]” said Nasheed.
Nasheed went on to express his concerns that some of the figures active in the MDP campaign site in Thimarafushi island have stepped away from the party’s activities.
The most competitive candidate facing up against Mustafa in the constituency is Jumhooree Party’s leader and current MP for Kinbidhoo constituency, Abdulla Riyaz.
Riyaz and Mustafa are seen targeting verbal attacks at each other at their respective campaign rallies.
While Thimarafushi constituency is a competitive seat in Parliament, Mustafa won the seat in the last election with a difference of 11 votes.
There is less than a week away for voting to take place for the Parliamentary Elections, scheduled for 6 April.
