Demolition of Unsafe Buildings Underway in Male’ to Ensure Public Safety

The Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works has commenced the demolition of three unused buildings in Male’ City.
The decision to demolish the three buildings was taken based on the potential danger they pose to the public. The buildings to be demolished are Orchid Plaza, New Plaza, and House Plaza located in Maafannu ward of the city. The three buildings had previously been damaged by fires, and are no longer safe for people to enter or occupy.
The Ministry will begin by demolishing Orchid Plaza and clearing the site, and use the land to assist in the demolition of New Plaza.
Speaking to PSM News, the Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar said the work will be carried out in a manner that does not inconvenience the public. The demotion will be completed within a reasonable timeframe, he said.
"These buildings are constructed of steel frames and topped with concrete. Therefore, each demolition will require electricity, and gas cutters will also have to be used. We are prioritising safety and security in carrying out the project. Since these are residential areas, we cannot work past certain hours, and we have to ensure the public is not disturbed,” the Minister said.
The Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works has previously undertaken similar demolitions of unused and unsafe buildings in Male’ City.
