Nasheed hints at impeachment of President Yameen

After the local council elections on Saturday, Nasheed told reporters that a government's legitimacy would be based on the support of the people. If the people gave majority of the parliament to MDP, impeachment of President Yameen would be "necessary," he added. "By God's will, we will be able to work towards that," he said. Nasheed, who lost to Progressive Party of Maldives' (PPM) Yameen in the November presidential elections, said council election results showed that the people want MDP to be in power. It also demonstrates the results of the parliamentary elections to be held in March, he said. MDP has taken the lead in both Male and Addu city councils and other populous areas. But the clear winner is yet to be known.
