President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reiterated that completing and commencing operations of the new terminal at Velana International Airport is the Government’s top priority.
He made these remarks during the eighth episode of the Rayyithunaa Eku podcast series.
President Dr Muizzu noted that the first matter addressed during the transition period was reviewing the progress of the airport development project. As he emphasised, completing the terminal and starting operations remains the Government’s foremost priority.
With preparations underway to inaugurate the new terminal in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of the Maldives’ independence, President Dr Muizzu highlighted the importance of recognising the contributions of various Heads of State to the airport’s development over the years.
He stated that the terminal’s completion would bring significant economic progress and open new opportunities, particularly in the tourism sector. The President described the airport as the country’s most vital economic asset, stressing that progress there directly benefits all Maldivians and is closely tied to national development and overall well-being.
He also spoke about the regional airports currently in operation and ongoing airport development projects across the country.
As the nation prepares to celebrate Independence Day, President Dr Muizzu said his greatest wish as Head of State is for the Maldives to become a nation of harmonious, united citizens. He expressed hope for a joyful society free of vengeance, noting that true independence is intrinsically linked to social cohesion.
