Maldives became the chairman of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) because of the increasing strength in its Foreign Policies، said President Abdulla Yameen Abdula Gayoom.
President Yameen said that huge input in Foreign relations، Maldives achieved the Chairman of the Small Island States despite ‘bigger and better’ fellow small island or tropical island countries in the alliance، speaking during the Third Year Celebrations Ceremony of Progressive Party of Maldives held at Carnival Area on Friday night.
“Are there not bigger countries than our fragile small country? To become chairman of the entire alliance of small island states was due to the huge input in our foreign policies.” President Yameen said.
President Yameen has highlighted the endless efforts former President Maumoon has put in regards with the fighting for the rights and the development of the small island states.
“We do not want the fame out of becoming the chairman of AOSIS. Our former President Maumoon has put endless efforts fighting for the rights of the small island states like our own country.” President Yameen said.
He further said Maldives desires to understand the status of Maldives and other countries like Maldives، and present them in the international community for their considerations.
“Our goal is to fulfill the promises in our Manifesto. Becoming chairman of AOSIS is to raise the concerns of the countries facing environmental troubles due to climate change.” President Yameen added.
AOSIS was formed 25 years ago with Maldives in lead after the first conference of Small Island Developing States held at Maldives in 1988.
