A Bill on Amendment to the Tourism Ministry Law has been proposed to the People’s Majlis to expand the authority of Minister of Tourism، bringing jurisdictions of several Government’s ministries and authorities under Tourism Ministry.
The Bill on Amendment to the Law was proposed by MP for Hoarafushi Mohamed Ismail from MDA، stating the Amendment will pace up the works under one authority.
The bill on amendment states the authority to approve and conduct Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for any environmental impacts for resort developments will be under Ministry of Tourism. EIA and other issues related to environment is currently under Environment Protection Agency (EPA).
The bill further states to grant the authority to the Tourism Ministry to fine any entities violating the laws and regulations regarding the environmental issues.
In addition، the bill also states that Tourism Ministry will set the guidelines of resorts and the services and amenities to be provided by it.
