In a significant development for Maldives' fishing community, the government has announced that a new fuel station will be established in Meemu Atoll following the conclusion of Eid celebrations.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam who emphasised the administration's commitment to supporting fishermen across the archipelago despite challenging global economic conditions.
Minister Shiyam revealed that the government has prioritised alleviating the hardships faced by Maldivian fishermen, particularly in light of steep increases in oil prices resulting from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
"The government's decision to reduce fuel prices has given great hope to the fishermen," the Minister said, underscoring that fisheries represent not merely an individual occupation but a livelihood connected to families and society at large throughout the island nation.
The distribution framework for fuel has evolved considerably in recent months. While the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) previously played a central role in supplying petroleum products to fishing vessels, operators increasingly sought fuel through the State Trading Organization (STO) or Fuel Supply Maldives. Minister Shiyam explained that STO's position as a direct importer of fuel, combined with its established infrastructure for procuring products directly from suppliers, has made it the preferred channel for fishermen. Consequently, the current initiative to construct fuel stations across every atoll is being implemented through collaboration with STO.
The situation in Meemu Atoll has drawn particular attention from authorities. Minister Shiyam acknowledged that the atoll faces a notable fuel shortage despite its status as a significant fishing centre. Fishermen in the region have been obtaining fuel from neighbouring atolls, a workaround that has persisted despite considerable inconvenience. The Minister indicated that the establishment of a permanent fuel station represents a direct response to this longstanding gap in infrastructure.
The broader policy framework supporting these efforts traces back to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's campaign commitments, specifically his pledge to provide fuel at subsidised STO prices to fishing vessels throughout the country. Under this administration, fuel distribution points have expanded from four locations to thirteen, representing a more than threefold increase in service accessibility.
According to official figures, around 2.5 million litres of fuel have already been distributed to fishermen under the current policy framework.
