Minister treated ‘respectfully’ during raid: police

Speaking during the two minute police briefing Sunday afternoon in which the police, for the first time, broke their silence regarding the raid; Superintendent of Police Ahmed Shifan said police had raided two apartments in the building where Minister Nazim lived, confiscating some evidence they “needed for their investigation from one of the apartments. The police official said that they had raided two apartments on the 8th floor of a building in Galolhu district of the capital, upon which police officers involved in the raid had found out that one of the apartments was Minister Nazim’s private residence. He said that police officers involved in the raid had “extended all respect and courtesy due to Minister Mohamed Nazim while conducting the search on the apartment.” “Nothing which could take away basic human rights took place during this police operation. During the operation, police applied necessary force given circumstances, in entering the apartment,” said Superintendent Shifan. Police did not divulge any further information regarding the operation, but said that the matter was being investigated to a “great extent.” Police destroyed the door of Minister Nazim’s residence – his wife’s apartment – and started the raid at around 3:15 am. Police spent at least two hours searching and confiscating some documents from the apartment. Though police have not given any reason as to why the minister’s private residence was raided in the dead of the night; Haveeru has been informed that Criminal Court had approved a court order for the raid under suspicions of “terrorism, and harboring weapons and explosives.” Minister Nazim remains tight-lipped on the matter, maintaining that it was the police who would be commenting on the matter.
