Case of extortion of medical students abroad being investigated

Police are investigating a case of fraudulent extortion of money from Maldivian students studying medicine abroad.
Police shared with the media on Tuesday that a case was reported to the police on Monday that 'Zeed International Pvt Ltd' had taken money from a student to study medicine abroad but had not arranged for it.
Therefore, the police are investigating the case, and it has come to light that the company has extorted large sums of money from students who wish to study medicine in Sri Lanka, Malaysia and the Philippines.
Students and families affected are expressing their concerns on social media.
According to a Facebook post by an account under the name 'Ibrahim Hafiz', Zeed International has duped and extorted students by claiming that they have to pay three or four times the actual tuition fees for medicine programs in Malaysia, Philippines and Sri Lanka. The post also said that a Sri Lankan was behind it.
The scam has caused various visa problems for many students. Several doctors and medical students have already gotten caught in the scam, the post said. The Facebook user has also advised people on how to avoid getting scammed.
Photos shared with the post show that the company has already placed advertising banners on the main streets of Male’ city.
