Velana International Airport to Host Grand Opening of New Terminal with Over 6,000 Guests

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has announced that the grand opening ceremony for Velana International Airport’s new terminal will be held on the night of July 26, 2025, with over 6,000 guests expected to attend, said Deputy Managing Director Mujtaba Lateef.
The ceremony will include invitations extended to former presidents and all local councils. MACL is also coordinating with government ministries to enable live viewing of the event from islands across the Maldives.
The new terminal, timed to coincide with the nation’s 60th Independence Day, is designed to accommodate 7.5 million passengers annually. It features modern amenities including six aero bridges, self-check-in counters, automatic baggage handling, and advanced visual docking guidance systems.
Since President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration began, significant progress has been made, completing half of the remaining construction work within one and a half years. Enhancements include expanded duty-free shopping areas and food and beverage facilities not part of the original plan.
