President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that 500 housing units will be constructed in Raa atoll Ungoofaaru as it has been selected as an island which will be developed as an urban centre.
President Muizzu said that urban centres will be set up in seven regions of the Maldives, with each being equipped with high standard services in all sectors.
He said that this would include advancements in development, health sector, education sector and economy.
The President stated that as Ungoofaaru is developed into an urban centre, those from nearby islands will choose to migrate to Ungoofaaru. Hence, 500 housing units will be built to cater to residents of Ungoofaaru, as well as those who choose to move there.
He said that the necessary technical work for this project will be undertaken while liaising with the island council and other relevant institutions.
The President noted that the land reclaimed in the island is being eroded before it has been properly protected. He said that solutions will be found for these environmental and climate change impacts. He said that the area now eroded will also be reclaimed under the land reclamation efforts that will be commenced in the future.
The President also pledged that the island's school will be expanded, and the health sector strengthened. The development of the health sector will be carried out in phases over a three year budget, he said.
