Home Minister Umar Naseer has stated that former President Mohamed Nasheed who was sentenced to thirty years in prison will be detained in Dhoonidhoo until a special unity is established in Maafushi prison.
The Minister revealed the news through a tweet sent out on Friday night in which he had revealed that he had "asked Police to hold [President] Nasheed in Dhoonidhoo Detention Centre until a special unit is constructed in Maafushi Prison."
He said that the Commissioner of Prisons have now been requested to build a special unit in Maafushi prison.
Umar Naseer said that prisoners are categorized in prison and a category has to be decided for the prisoner within twenty one days.
The Maldives Criminal Court on Friday 13 March sentenced former President Mohamed Nasheed to 13 years in jail on charges of ‘terrorism’, for the detention, while he was still president in 2012, of a criminal court judge who had been accused of corruption, abuse of power and who had refused to obey police summons.
