Police clarify Parliament Member’s hospitalisation while in custody

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has issued a clarification regarding the hospitalisation of Member of Parliament Mauroof Zakir while he was in police custody, stating that his medical examination was conducted upon his request and was unrelated to any incident during his detention.
A statement issued by the police said Zakir was taken into police custody on 11 December. During his time in custody, he requested a medical consultation, following which an assessment was conducted by the on-duty custodial doctor. According to MPS, he was subsequently taken to a hospital for a medical examination in accordance with standard operating procedures governing medical care for persons in police custody, based on the doctor’s advice. Authorities confirmed that the request for medical attention was not related to any incident during his apprehension or while in custody, and said Zakir was released after receiving medical care.
The police emphasised the safety, dignity, and well-being of all individuals in custody are maintained in strict accordance with the law, established procedures, and human rights obligations.
The police also cautioned against disclosure, speculation, or circulation of a Member of Parliament’s private medical information, and highlighted that such actions may violate privacy rights, cause distress to the individual and their families, and undermine public trust in media and democratic institutions.
The police reiterated their commitment to transparency, accountability, and maintaining public confidence.
