Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that people would only be able to breathe a sigh of relief with former President Abdulla Yameen’s absence.
This is in response to Yameen, who while speaking at an opposition campaign event on Friday night via phone, said that people would only be able to breathe a sigh of relief after Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), People’s National Congress (PNC), Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) and Jumhooree Party (JP) get the majority of the parliament seats.
Speaking at a Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) campaign event on Saturday, Nasheed said that people would only be able to breathe a sigh of relief after Yameen explain the murders and disappearances during his administration. Nasheed highlighted the importance of finding out who ordered the killing of religious scholar Dr. Afrasheem Ali, and what happened to the missing journalist Ahmed Rilwan. He also noted the need of the public to uncover the location of the state money that had gone missing during Yameen’s administration.
Speaking at the event, Nasheed noted all the people Yameen had imprisoned, including JP leader Qasim Ibrahim and his son, as well as Yameen’s own nephew MP Faris Maumoon and half-brother former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
Yameen was jailed on February 18 for attempting to intimidate and bribe witnesses in the money laundering case against him but was recently freed by the High Court.
