President calls for renewed multilateral cooperation on International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called for a renewed commitment to multilateralism as the foundation for addressing pressing global challenges — a priority particularly critical for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) navigating complex international waters.
In a message marking the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace 2025, President Dr Muizzu emphasised that in a world facing multiple global conflicts, widening inequality, and an accelerating climate crisis, cooperation among states has never been more vital.
From the Maldives’ perspective as a Small Island Developing State, the President highlighted the acute vulnerabilities these nations face, particularly from environmental threats and economic instability. For such countries, he explained, multilateral forums provide essential platforms to amplify their voices, safeguard sovereignty, and champion climate diplomacy fundamental to their survival.
He also reflected on the Maldives’ diplomatic contributions, noting achievements made despite the nation's small size. As one of the smallest countries to join the United Nations (UN), he noted how the Maldives successfully introduced the landmark 1989 UNGA Resolution on "Protection and Security of Small States" that formally acknowledged small nations' vulnerabilities.
The President called for reform of international institutions to reflect current geopolitical realities, emphasising the need to reimagine structures where justice is not the privilege of powerful nations and equity is fundamental. He reinforced that peace is not simply the absence of conflict, but rather the presence of dialogue, the pursuit of shared purpose, and the triumph of cooperation.
Earlier today, the President also posted on his official X account to mark the occasion.
International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace is observed annually on 24 April to celebrate and strengthen global cooperation in resolving conflicts peacefully while upholding international law.
