Following a decree by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu designating H.Dh. Hirimaradhoo as part of the Hanimaadhoo electoral constituency, the number of eligible voters in Hanimaadhoo has risen to 2,164.
The President decided to relocate the residents of H.Dh. Hirimaradhoo to Hanimaadhoo within the same atoll, issuing the amended decree regarding this matter on December 30, 2025.
According to the President’s Office, a primary objective of this change is to facilitate the recognition of Hirimaradhoo residents as part of the Hanimaadhoo electoral constituency for the Local Council Elections scheduled for 2026.
The Elections Commission (EC) released the list of eligible voters for the 2026 Local Council and Women’s Development Committee elections on Wednesday. In accordance with the presidential decree, residents of Hirimaradhoo have been added to the Hanimaadhoo voter list.
With this addition, the total number of eligible voters in Hanimaadhoo for the 2026 Local Council and Women’s Development Committee elections stands at 2,164.
In the most recent major election, the 2024 Parliamentary Elections, the number of eligible voters in Hanimaadhoo was 1,671, while the number for Hirimaradhoo was 422.
The presidential decree states that once the residents of Hirimaradhoo have settled and officially registered in Hanimaadhoo, Hirimaradhoo will be removed from the list of inhabited islands in the Maldives. The decree further specifies that these amendments will come into effect on the date the government officially announces the completion of the relocation of Hirimaradhoo residents to Hanimaadhoo.
During a visit to Hirimaradhoo to meet with its residents, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stated that the government aims to complete the relocation process within a minimum of 18 months. To facilitate this project, an agreement was signed on that day between the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure and the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to carry out a housing project and establish municipal services in the area of Hanimaadhoo designated for the residents of Hirimaradhoo.
