The Parliament is set to reconvene for an extraordinary sitting again on Tuesday, marking the fourth time for the legislative assembly to reconvene during recess.
A spokesperson from the Parliament announced the upcoming sitting on Monday afternoon.
“The Parliament has received a request for an extraordinary sitting under Article 45 (d) of the Parliament’s standing orders,” said the spokesperson. “An extraordinary sitting will therefore be held on September 16, 2025 (Tuesday).”
However, the Parliament has yet to publicize the agenda for the sitting.
“And, we hereby inform you that the agenda for the sitting will be shared later,” said the spokesperson.
While the Parliament went into recess on August 19, the Independent Institutions Committee has been holding regular meetings as it reviews a contentious media bill that seeks to replace the existing self-regulatory system with a government-controlled commission. The Parliament has also reconvened thrice, including on Monday, when it passed a referendum bill.
The legislatively assembly also gave its approval to appointing Mohamed Shafeeg Mahmoodh as the vice president of the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM), and in approval of promoting Civil Service Commission (CSC)’s vice president Mohamed Mujthaz to the role of the commission’s president, and appointing Mohamed Nasih, who headed the commission until his previous term expired earlier in September, as the vice president.
