Minister of Foreign Affairs Dunya Maumoon has responded to the allegations on Media and other Political statements regarding her response to the questions in the Parliament on 5th November.
Minister Dunya’s statement on Foreign Ministry’s website said that she has responded to the questions by members of the Parliament with honesty and with utmost respect to the Constitution and the laws of the Maldives.
“My answers were based on the most accurate information available. The information shows that the issue of Maritime Silk Road was in fact discussed during the Chinese President’s recent visit to India، and it is confirmed by the statement issued about the visit.” the statement said، followed by a link to the statement issued by India regarding Chinese President’s visit to India.
She said that in contrary to the speculations، the decisions on the Silk Road are publicly available and that the information she presented to the Parliament was obtained from publicly available documents.
Following her response to the Parliament on 5th November، Indian High Commission in Maldives released a statement saying that India has no involvement in the China’s proposed 21st Maritime Silk Road Project.
Furthermore، MDP released a statement، in light of the statement released by Indian High Comission، condemning Dunya for presenting wrong information in the Parliament regarding India’s involvement in Silk Road Project.
MDP demanded Dunya to resign as Minister of Foreign Affairs and claimed that her ‘absurd action would impose negative affect on the strong and long-lasted ties between the neighbouring countries’.
Minister Dunya said in her statement that President Yameen’s foreign policy is aimed at promoting the national interests of the Maldives، not the interests of any other country، and that the current Government will protect and preserve the independence and sovereignty of Maldives.
Minister Dunya concluded her statement saying that “Maldivian public is concerned that the opposition MDP and its media instruments are actively involved in promoting the objectives and interests of another country in the Maldives to the detriment of our country’s independence and sovereignty”.
