The Thulusdhoo Island Council has passed a resolution ordering Thulusdhoo Police to evacuate the building it operates out of and to handover the space within three months.
The resolution, which was passed at a council meeting last month and made public on social media on Wednesday, endorsed a previous decision made by the Women's Development Committee (WDC).
The council said that the building and land used by the police station, which belongs to the Women's Development Committee, was given rent-free for three years on November 11, 2014, on the condition that they carry out their own repairs.
That agreement expired on October 10, 2017.
The resolution stated that in the six years since the expiration of the agreement, the council had met with Thulusdhoo Police, Maldives Police Service, and senior government officials, several times requesting that WDC be facilitated a way to earn an income.
Among these efforts, a letter was sent to the police on November 1, 2021, stating that the building would be leased for the next five years, the council said. After agreeing to this, a draft agreement was sent to the station in January 2022, but even after two years, the agency had not responded, the resolution detailed.
The decision also stated that the council sent a letter to police requesting them to sign the agreement and return it to the council within 15 days. If police fails to comply with these requests, then the building would have to be vacated in three months time, the resolution read.
