Maldives and India Discuss Expediting Thilamale’ Bridge Project

The Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib and the Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives G Balasubramanian have discussed accelerating the progress of the Thilamale’ Bridge project.
The Thilamale' Bridge Project, valued at USD 500 million, is funded through a USD 100 million grant from the Indian Government, a USD 400 million line of credit, and support from the Maldivian Government. The bridge will span a total of 6.7km. Under the project, the bridge segment connecting Male' City and Gulhifalhu is set to conclude on 31 March 2026, and the component interlinking Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi is scheduled to finish by 30 September 2026. Meanwhile, the entire project is also slated for completion by 30 September 2026.
During a courtesy call by High Commissioner Balasubramanian on Minister Muththalib, discussions centered on the development projects being implemented in the Maldives with Indian assistance. Particular attention was given to the Thilamale’ Bridge project, the largest infrastructural project currently underway in the Maldives. The two officials also explored further cooperation in the Maldives’ infrastructural development.
According to the latest update on the bridge project, as of November last year, 46.58 percent of the bridge’s construction had been completed. While the Maldivian government has previously raised concerns over delays in the project’s progress, it has since stated that the work had been accelerated following discussions with the Indian government.

The Thilamale’ Bridge is a significant project for the development of the Greater Male’ Area. The completion of this project is expected to bring economic and social progress.
