Interim President of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that MDP will discuss electing Leader of Jumhooree Party (JP) Gasim Ibrahim as Speaker of Parliament.
Nasheed made this remark while talking to reporters outside Maafannu Villa after a two-hour meeting with Gasim tonight.
He said that the purpose of these discussions was to ensure separation of state powers.
Nasheed said that several members of MDP Parliamentary Group support electing Gasim as Speaker of Parliament, and a decision on whether to endorse Gasim in this regard will be made by the party’s Steering Committee.
When asked if these discussions might create discord within the coalition, Gasim said that ‘friends will meet each other’, and that ‘discord within the coalition is a separate issue’.
