International Association of Prosecutors condemns the attack on PG Shameem

The International Association of Prosecutors (IAP) has condemned the attack on Prosecutor General (PG) Hussein Shameem and called to initiate immediate action on the case.
In a letter sent to PG Shameem from the IAP, they wrote that the attack on him is deeply concerning and called on concerned authorities to conduct an effective investigation to ensure the apprehension of the assailants responsible for the attack in order to bring them to justice.
They had also called to enforce an appropriate environment that allows Prosecutors to safely carry out their duties and ensure their protection.
The PG was attacked at the entrance of his house while on his way home after taking his child to school. He had sustained fractures to the bones in his forearm as a result of the strike with a hammer by the assailants who had been stalking him on a motorcycle. It is believed that the attack was aimed at his head.
The two perpetrators have been apprehended and will remain in custody until the conclusion of the trial.
PG Shameem is an individual who frequently goes for swimming and running by himself, although his security accompanies him from time to time. However, following the attack, his security has been tightened.
Commissioner of Police (CP) Ali Shujau stated that at the time of the attack, Shameem had not utilized his security. He stated that the security service assigned to leading figures of the State is not a choice to be employed at their dispense and the service should be used as instructed by the service provider.
The current policy conducts a threat assessment on senior representatives of the state and assigns their security according to the analyzed threat level. He said that he now acknowledges the importance of assigning security to senior officials around the clock.
CP Shujau said that the attack on PG Shameem was an organized crime that was executed with using measures to conceal their identities. However, the assailants have now been identified and apprehended. The police had not received any intelligence information prior to the investigation.
The CP said that that some crimes occur without the knowledge of the police. Nevertheless, he assured that they will not allow any more opportunities for such attacks. He added that they will review the standards of the security assigned to senior officials of the state as well.
