According to Nasheed، the decision must be withdrawn in order to maintain the peace in the Indian Ocean region، and it is therefore compulsary.
With regards to this، Mohamed Nasheed had tweeted on Saturday that confirms him urging President Yameen to withdraw the decision of participating in Silk Route project.
In addition، Nasheed also stated that the peace between India is vital for Maldives and therefore it is the foundation of keeping a serene conflict-free zone in the Indian Ocean region.
President Yameen expressed his full support to Chinese government on their planned project for a 21st Century Silk Route project. President Yameen had confirmed Maldivian government’s support during China President’s visit back in September. A joint-statement that released during China President Xi Jinping’s visit from President’s Office assured that Maldives as a citizen and as a government will be assisting China government with the promising Silk Route project، and Maldives would in fact participate on the project on a operational level.
Following this decision from India has strongly criticized Maldives.
Although Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon confirms a peaceful agreement had been reached between China and India regarding the Silk Route project، Indian government denies this claim.
Furthermore، a statement released by Indian High Commission in accordance to Sayyid Aboobakuruddeen، spokesperson for Indian External Affairs Ministy، rebutted the claims stating that China and India had not sat down to discuss the terms and conditions regarding the Silk Route project.
