Defense Minister Colonel (Retired) Mohamed Nazim said that some Civil Servants provide relatively poor services on their duties.
Inaugurating the “Dhivehi Civil Service Conference 2014” in Islamic Centre on Tuesday، Minister Nazim said that Civil Servants should fulfill their duties honestly and provide quality services to the people.
“Majority of the employees can be called good and honest workers. However، there are large amount of employees providing very poor services.” he said.
Nazim said it is notable that some staffs are showing carelessness on their jobs، have tardy attendance and call in sick too often near to weekends and holidays. He said some of the actions are not acceptable to be seen from Civil Servants as they should be honest and courteous on their jobs.
“The mentioned problems should be resolved immediately. My opinion is to bring change to the rules and regulation. We should implement a regulation not to give four or six months vacation.” Nazim said.
In addition، Minister highlighted the important roles of Permanent Secretaries to enforce the Government’s Manifesto، and said that they are Political figures in the Civil Service. Therefore، he said، the cooperation and support of Permanent Secretaries are of utter importance to the Government.
Minister also said that، today، it is truly needed that Civil Servants to be motivated. However، to motivate the employees، increasing salary is not the only thing، he said. There are other means of keeping strong relationships with the employees which would motivate them، he added.
However، he highlighted that there are no spot-on methods in the Civil Service System to motivate the Civil Servants.
“Motivation cannot be done only by a speech. But we can try and find other ways to motivate Civil Servants. I urge the authorities to discuss regarding the matter.” Minister Nazim said.
The conference started on Tuesday is a three-day program. Senior officials from different Ministries and Government Authorities participated in the conference، to discuss solutions to the problems being faced by Civil Servants.
