Falah proposes floor vote to accept or reject resolutions, citing increase in ‘pointless’ resolutions

Ruling PNC’s Parliamentary Group leader, Inguraidhoo MP Ibrahim Falah, on Monday, has proposed to introduce a vote to accept or reject resolutions submitted to the Parliament, citing an increase in “pointless” resolutions submitted without adequate reasoning which he says is expected to increase.
Main opposition MDP’s South Hulhumale’ MP Dr. Ahmed Shamheed has submitted a resolution seeking to gauge the opinion of parliamentarians regarding the alleged plan by the government to print money before the Parliament.
While debating on the resolution, Falah described President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu as a leader who will not sacrifice the nation by any means.
He called on main opposition MDP to consider the gravity of what they are doing when submitting emergency motions and resolutions to the Parliament.
Falah, emphasizing that a vote is held to accept or reject emergency motions submitted to the Parliament on critical national issues, highlighted the difference in practice when it comes to resolution.
He noted that resolutions are of a lesser category than emergency motions. He detailed that resolutions are submitted by MPs seeking the opinion of other MPs regarding a certain matter.
“Might submit [a resolution] seeking whether the MP should contest the presidential election. This is not logical. Hence, honorable speaker, I propose [an amendment] to parliament’s regulation. This is my own opinion and not in any way in my capacity as PNC’s PG leader. This a proposal put forth as the parliamentary representative for Inguraidhoo constituency. I see it necessary to amend Parliament’s regulations same for resolutions as emergency motions,” he said, stressing the importance of a vote when accepting or rejecting a resolution for debate.
Falah stated that MPs are elected to Parliament not to engage in senseless acts, but to ensure development and prosperity for their constituencies.
MDP MPs have submitted both emergency motions and resolutions regarding various matters.
Notably, an emergency motion submitted by MDP’s Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir over the delays in deciding on the Israeli passport ban bill that currently remains stymied in the Parliament was rejected by the speaker’s bench on Monday, citing failure to meet requirements of an emergency motion under the Parliament’s regulations.
