Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has announced that a section of the new international terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) will officially open on July 26, 2025.
Spanning 78,000 square meters, the newly developed terminal is designed to accommodate up to 7 million passengers annually. The facility will feature modern amenities including aero boarding bridges and advanced baggage handling systems, addressing long-standing congestion issues at the airport.
The current international terminal was originally built to serve 1.5 million passengers per year. However, with tourist arrivals now exceeding 2 million annually, the existing infrastructure has been operating beyond its intended capacity.
MACL stated that the new terminal will significantly improve passenger experience by resolving space limitations and offering a range of upgraded services. These include multiple food and beverage outlets, retail stores, lounges, and other passenger-focused amenities.
The opening of the new terminal marks a key milestone in the government’s broader infrastructure development efforts and the country's continued growth as a global tourism destination.
