Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan said today that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has decided that each day inmates spend participating in rehabilitation programs in prisons will count as a day deducted from their remaining sentence.
Speaking at a special ceremony to inaugurate "Maldivian Cultural Yard" in Maafushi Prison, Minister Ihusaan emphasized that it is inappropriate to view prisoners merely as individuals "kept behind bars." Instead, the government's goal is to reform them into productive and skilled individuals by the time they reintegrate into society.
The minister highlighted that prisoners can gain work experience in any field they choose by participating in rehabilitation programs and shared the President's decision.

"President Muizzu has introduced a policy where each day a prisoner spends in a rehabilitation program will be counted as one day deducted from their prison sentence," Ihusaan stated.
He added that efforts are underway to establish guidelines to implement this policy effectively.
The "Maldivian Cultural Yard," inaugurated today at Maafushi Prison, will offer training in various everyday skills and cultural activities, including weaving, boat building, carpentry.
