Home Minister Umar Naseer has said that the people of Maldives have always wanted a government which governs and rules upon and preserves Islamic values.
Home Minister Umar Naseer made this remark speaking at the official function held at Dharubaaruge on Tuesday, to mark this year’s Republic Day.
He said that the Maldives has changed from sultanate to a republican system of government and from that to a modern democratic system. However he noted that the people of Maldives have always sought a government based on Islamic principles regardless of these changes.
He said that the people have always urged the governments to be within the confines of Islam and not to violate those boundaries.
Umar Naseer said that the history of Maldives has shown that the end of every leader who chose to transgress those bounds were bitter,
“The wall around the leaders is the wall of Islam. No one should ever go beyond those walls. Within the walls is the constitution. And within those are the laws made based on the constitution. And within that is every citizen of this nation. So we should ways heed to be within these boundaries. Within these laws,” he said.
