The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has commenced preparatory works to strengthen electricity generation capacity across the Maldives, ahead of the annual peak season for power consumption.
The initiative includes the delivery and installation of 12 generator sets (gensets) to islands nationwide, a move aimed at ensuring stable, reliable, and uninterrupted electricity supply during periods of heightened demand.
STELCO undertakes targeted readiness programmes each year in anticipation of increased electricity usage. This year the work has begun ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, when household consumption traditionally rises. In a statement shared on social media, the utility provider confirmed that preparatory works for the upcoming peak season are already underway.
According to STELCO, the gensets - in capacity of 600 Kw and 1,000 Kw have been procured for the delivery to the islands. This effort aims to enhance island level generation capacity and improve system resilience. Each of the 12 identified islands will receive one generator under the endeavor.
The company emphasised that installation and commissioning of all units will be completed before the start of Ramadan, reinforcing its commitment to delivering electricity services in a sustainable and uninterrupted manner. STELCO said the initiative is intended not only to boost operational capacity but also to strengthen public confidence in the reliability of its power supply.
In a related development, STELCO has also commissioned and brought into operation a 1,200 Kw genset in Vilimalé’, further increasing generation capacity in the Greater Malé’ region. The company noted that the additional capacity enhances supply stability and provides greater assurance to households regarding service quality and continuity.
