The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has forecast unclear air conditions across the country for the next five days.
According to the AQI reading, the air quality in Male' City currently stands at 111. The capital’s air contains 39.8 micrograms of dust, smoke and particulate matter per cubic metre, eight times higher than the limit recommended by the World Health Organization.
MET said air pollution is expected to remain at the same level over the next five days, with visibility in Male' City expected to fall to three kilometres.
Air quality has also deteriorated across most southern islands, except Addu City and Fuvahmulah, where conditions remain clearer.

An AQI level of 111 places Male' in the orange alert category. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has previously stated that when air quality falls between 101 and 150, vulnerable groups and individuals with respiratory conditions are at increased risk of health complications.
HPA advises vulnerable individuals to wear masks when going outdoors, keep doors and windows closed to prevent polluted air from entering homes, and postpone sports or strenuous outdoor activities until conditions improve.
Air quality had been clear earlier last week before deteriorating again. The conditions come during the school holidays, a period when many families travel to different parts of the country.
