'No guarantee govt. will build an airport in Kulhudhuffushi before 2018'

Kulhudhuffushi Council says there is no guarantee that the island will get an airport by 2018, although it was a campaign pledge of President Abdulla Yameen.
Speaking to Vnews, Kulhudhuffushi Council's President Ali Mohamed said that President Yameen will not be able to step foot on the island until he builds an airport, and warned of "intense" protests if he visits the island to campaign for a second term.
He said the council has been receiving numerous complaints due the delay in starting the airport projects, which has been shared with the government, to no avail. He added that government has not given them any information about the project and have not responded to council's letters either.
Mohamed said that some work was done during the month of Ramadan, by a foreign company tasked with making an assessment for the airport project, but he added that the council was not given any information on it.
Assuring that the council would keep the land reserved for the airport untouched, Mohamed said that President Yameen needs to fulfill his electoral pledges that helped him get elected.
Four companies had expressed interest in the Kulhudhuffushi airport project when the government had announced it. Those companies were Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), and companies from Denmark, Sri Lanka, and Kuwait.
