Eva requests India’s help to free Nasheed

Member of Parliament for Galolhu North Constituency Eva Abdulla has sent a letter to India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting his help to free former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed who is serving a 13 year jail sentence for terrorism.
Eva, who is President Nasheed’s niece, sent this letter to not only request their help in Nasheed’s release but also for the release of other political prisoners and for their assistance in changing the current state of Maldives.
Eva’s letter also expressed her concern over the treatment of political leaders and humanitarian workers by President Abdulla Yameen’s administration.
In the letter, she said that Nasheed was sentenced unlawfully and asked for their assistance in his release and other political leaders in prison and to help in establishing democracy in the country once again. She also said that the current government was undermining the rights given to the citizens by the Constitution and international law.
Noting India’s influence in the country’s legal workings, she said that it was also in India’s best interest to bring democracy to Maldives.
In the two-page letter, she also said that while protests were ongoing against the unlawful arrest of Nasheed, government officials are also repeatedly joining opposition coalitions.
She also noted the constant death threats on those in opposition to the government and the disappearance of Ahmed Rilwan. She added that it had been 257 days since his disappearance and that she questions the effort the Police are expending to reveal the truth behind the case.
