MWSC in Service for Three Decades, President Extends Congratulations

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has congratulated the Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) on its 30th Anniversary.
Acknowledging MWSC’s contributions and services In a social media post, the President extended his gratitude to both past and present employees of MWSC.
Since taking office in November 2023, President Muizzu has initiated several efforts to improve the quality of water and sewerage services provided by the MWSC. The water storage capacity in the city is currently being increased to 10,000 tonnes to ensure water security for the public. The work of connecting the water storage plants in Male’ and Hulhumale’, and building a water network through the Sinamale’ Bridge is also nearing completion. In addition, 15 sewerage projects are being carried out in different parts of the country.
MWSC was established on 1 April, 1995, with addressing the water shortage in Male’ and building a sewerage system being its main objective. Over the past 30 years, the company has expanded its services significantly in many areas, and now provides water and sewerage services in several islands in the atolls in addition to Male’ City, serving a total population of over 200,000 people. Unlike several government-owned companies, MWSC is able to operate self-sufficiently without relying on the government subsidies.
When MWSC began its services in 1995, Male’ had a population of 60,000. At the time, it had 60 employees, and its water production capacity was 900 cubic meters per day, and water storage capacity at 10,000 cubic meters. However, the company today has 1013 employees, and the capacity to produce 47,300 cubic meters of water, and a storage capacity of 44,858 cubic meters.
Although the company was initially intended to only cater to Male’, the company now provides services to Villimale’, Hulhumale’, Gulhifalhu, Thilafushi, Maafushi of Kaafu Atoll, Dhuvaafaru of Rama Atoll and Kulhudhuffushi of Haa Dhaalu Atoll, covering almost 50 percent of the country’s population. The company also provides electricity and water management services as well as provides ice to local fishers in Dhuvaafaru of Raa Atoll to general more profit.
Ensuring water security remains one of the company's most important objectives. In addition to the MWSC's main water production center in the Greater Male’ area, two water production centers have been established in two other areas of Male’, decentralising its operations. Work is also underway to build additional water storage tanks and water plants in Male’ and Hulhumale’, with the objective of increasing water production capacity by 26 percent and water storage by 28 percent by the end of this year.
While the Male’-Hulhumale’ water network connection is nearing completion, the company said the disinfection and pressure testing of the network is now ongoing. Most of the work of establishing the transfer pump stations in Male’ and Hulhumale’ has already been completed. Once the entire project is completed and the water network is connected and brought into service later this year, the company will have the capacity to pump 800 tonnes of water per hour, if needed.
MWSC has completed 107 projects to date under its efforts to establish water and sewerage systems in various islands across the country. A total of 32 projects, including 17 water projects and 15 sewerage projects, have been awarded to the company thus far this year.
Although the company was originally formed as a utility company specialising in the provision of water and sewerage services, during this past period, it has also ventured into the fields of engineering, trading and manufacturing.. Today, MWSC is also designing, installing and operating water and sewerage systems as well as designing and fabricating water plants. The company's ISO standard laboratory also provides commercial water analysis services to resorts and technical consultants. MWSC also produces bottled water and manufactures various sizes of pipes for water and sewerage works and water wiring, as well as various sizes of conduit pipes for electrical wiring.
