High-powered human rights lawyer Amal Clooney، who is a part of high-profile international legal team representing the former President Mohamed Nasheed who is jailed for 13 years، has stated that she will not rest until the release of  former president Mohamed Nasheed.
“The verdict was pre-planned and it was evident from the trial itself. As the lawyers of the President Nasheed، we will not rest until President Nasheed is released” stated Amal.

Amal Clooney appeared before reporters at the National Press Club on Thursday، accompanied by Laila Ali، the wife of President Nasheed and stated that she will appeal to the US government to put pressure on the government of Maldives to release the President Nasheed.
“Under any circumstance، the accusation against President Nasheed cannot be charged with terrorism” said Amal.
Speaking at the news conference، Laila Ali announced that the case has been filed to UN’s by the International legal team of President Nasheed asking to rule that President Nasheed’s detention is arbitrary، illegal under international law.
She further said that her visit to America is to gain support from UN، America and India to release her husband، President Nasheed.
Apart from Amal، the international legal team of Nasheed consists of Jared Genser، who had represented Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyil and Ben Emmerson، a judge on war crimes in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia.
