Flooding caused by sea swells has been experienced in Gaafu Alifu Madaveli, Gaafu Alifu Vilingili, and Gaafu Dhaalu Gadhdhoo on Monday.
Madaveli Council President Hussain Gasim told Sun Online that the water had flown about 150 ft into the island, and affected ten houses and the island pre-school building.
He added that there was no serious damage.
“We don’t know if this was caused by the full moon [tidal surge]. These areas are often affected during high tide. But this time it was worse,” he said.
Hussain Gasim further said that more flooding was expected during high tide at noon today as well, and sandbags have been placed to prevent water entering houses.
Gaafu Alifu Vilingili Council Vice President Thamheen Hassan said that flooding was seen about 1 ft into the island last night.
Gaafu Dhaalu Gadhdhoo Council Vice President Mohamed Sujau said that flooding was experienced in the island at around midnight last night, but no one was harmed and no properties were damaged.
Authorities have warned for flooding caused by sea swells during high tide between 25 and 30 September 2015.
