The Parliament on Monday voted in approval of appointing Mohamed Shafeeg Mahmoodh as the vice president of the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM), and in approval of promoting Civil Service Commission (CSC)’s vice president Mohamed Mujthaz to the role of the commission’s president, and appointing Mohamed Nasih, who headed the commission until his previous term expired earlier in September, as the vice president.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had asked for parliamentary approval to appoint Mujthaz, Nasih and Shafeeg to the new roles on Sunday.
The Parliament, which is in recess, reconvened for an extraordinary sitting on Monday during which the requests to approve Mujthaz and Nasih were sent for review to the Independent Institutions Committee, and the request to approve Shafeeg was sent to the Human Rights Committee.

Mujthaz secured approval with a unanimous vote of 68, while Nasih passed the floor vote with a majority vote of 64-1, and Shafeeg with a majority vote of 67-1.
A former parliamentary representative for Hanimaadhoo constituency, Mujthaz was appointed to the CSC on April 20, and as the commission’s vice president a little over a week later, on April 30.
Meanwhile, Nasih, who most recently served as president of the CSC, was reappointed to the commission for a second term on September 7.
Shafeeg was appointed to the HRCM on September 8. He previously served in a number of high-ranking roles in the government and government-owned companies, including as CEO of Local Government Authority (LGA), managing director of Maldives Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), and CEO of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).
