The statement made by the Criminal Court – stating that the delay in the issue of the trial report of state pressed terrorism charges against Nasheed is due to the lack of cooperation given by the lawyers and President Nasheed- has been refuted by the legal team of Nasheed.
Criminal Court has stated that President Nasheed had been constantly refusing to sign the statements given in the proceedings and as well the legal team was not supportive even though they were called to sign the statements.
In a press conference held today، legal team of Nasheed have stated that the legal team and as well Nasheed did not refuse to sign the documents.
However، they had requested to include all the statements made by Nasheed in the documents since the document had omitted several testimonies given by Nasheed.
Shairu، a lawyer in Nasheed’s legal team has stated that all the testimonies in the trial proceedings should be included in the statements.
Shairu stated that they “did not refuse to sign. Requesting to include information and refusing to sign are two different things”.
Shairu further stated that، he had a dialogue with the Criminal Court regarding the statement made by the Criminal Court that Nasheed refused to sign the statements.
“The statement stating that the delay in the report is due to President Nasheed and the legal team refusing to sign، contradict to the truth”
A statement issued by the court stated that the lawyers of Nasheed was brought to sign after sending a court order.
The statement further states that the statements were signed on 18th March 2015، Wednesday and the next day، the summary report was issued.
However، the lawyers has stated that the court order was sent after they had said that they will arrive to court and affirmed that they had cooperated with the criminal court.
The lawyers of Nasheed had stated that the appeal of the sentence is obstructed since the court has not issued the report.
President Nasheed has refused to appeal.
