Project launched to solve flooding in islands

Male Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has been awarded the designing of drainage systems in Gaaf Dhaal Atoll Thinadhoo and Haa Dhaal Atoll Kulhudhuffushi. Speaking after signing the agreement, State environment minister Abdul Matheen said that in addition to designing the drainage system, MWSC will be assigned to establish the system under the assistance of Global Environment Facility (GEF). The system is to be designed in the next four months and the project is expected to commence later this year, project manager Najfa Shaheem Raazee said. According to Najfa, the design will also be used in other islands and the system will look at the most environmental friendly means of drainage. She explained that Thinadhoo and Kulhudhuffushi had been chosen first based on a prior research done over the flooding issue. MWSC engineering manager Mohamed Rasheed said the project will also explore the possibility of recycling rainwater.
