Member of the foreign affairs committee of the European Parliament، Charles Tannock has called on Commonwealth to suspend Maldives until former President Nasheed -who is jailed for 13 years due to proven terrorism charges- is released and pardoned.
Tannock made the statement in an article by Tannock published in the Project Syndicate.
In the article he has said that Maldives is required to be put back on the path towards democracy and to do that “Commonwealth of Nations should suspend the Maldives until Nasheed has been released and pardoned.”
He has urged the countries to place economic pressure on Yameen’s government by “issuing travel warnings to tourists thinking of visiting the Maldives، while holding out the threat of targeted sanctions as well.”
However، the incumbent government has repeatedly said that Nasheed will not be released.
