The 13 year prison sentence on Former President Mohamed Nasheed will be commuted once he completes the appeal process on Criminal Court’s prison sentence on him، says President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
President made the statement as a response to Nasheed’s letter to the president requesting for clemency.
The spokesperson at the President’s Office، Ibrahim Muaz Ali told the local media last night that President Abdulla Yameen had requested ex-President Nasheed to complete the appeal process.
Muaz said the response of President was sent to Nasheed the following day he received Nasheed’s letter requesting for clemency.
Muaz further said that President mentioned that ‘this is what has been told before’، to complete the appeal process of the sentence.
The Article 20 (c) of the Clemency Act states that ‘The President has the discretion، on the President’s own initiative، to commute the sentence of a person convicted of a criminal offence، based on their age، health، treatment they are currently undergoing، their status and circumstance، or from a humanitarian perspective’.
