Court receives Nasheed's request to expedite trial over Judge's arrest

Nasheed last Friday had stated that a letter had been submitted the previous day urging the court to expedite his trial. However, Hulhumale Court yesterday denied receipt of Nasheed’s letter. But the Court has said that the letter had been received today and it would try to commence the trial at the earliest. The Court further added that it was difficult to state an exact date to begin the trial. The Prosecutor General’s (PG) office had re-filed the case at the Hulhumale Magistrate Court following an appeal at the High Court which annulled the Hulhumale Court’s decision to reject the case citing that it cannot hold the trial due to confines of the court’s jurisdiction. An official from the PG Office said that the case had been re-filed at the Hulhumale Court sometime in the afternoon yesterday while the Hulhumale Court confirmed that it had accepted the case. Besides former President Nasheed, former Defence Minister Tholhath Ibrahim Kaleyfaanu, former Chief of Defence Force Moosa Ali Jaleel, Brigadier Ibrahim Mohamed Didi and Colonel Ahmed Ziyad are all charged with the unconstitutional arrest of an innocent person under Article 81 of the Penal Code.
