The allegations made by former President Mohamed Nasheed are baseless، and he still has the opportunity to appeal his prison sentence، says Toby Cadman، one of the partners of Omnia Strategy LLP، which was appointed by the government to strengthen the legislative framework of the government.
Toby noted that the matter was presented to the United Nations Working Group On Arbitrary Detention without completing the due processes locally، in Maldivian courts and judicial commissions.
Mr. Cadman further said the legal rights of Nasheed will be determined by the court، regarding his legal proceedings. He said he hopes the court will allow Nasheed to appeal، as Nasheed’s Lawyers had previously stated that they have not received trial reports.
“Even after the 10 day window، Nasheed can appeal to higher courts،” Toby said، defending and reiterating the incumbent government’s statement on the matter.
