A woman threatened to ‘slit the throat’ of opposition leader, former President Mohamed Nasheed, at a ruling party rally on Saturday evening.
The rally, led by Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s women’s wing, was held in Hulhumalé.
One of speakers at the rally threatened to slit the former president’s throat ‘if he returns [to Maldives]’.
The woman said they will slit the throats of anyone, ‘whether it is Anni [Nasheed’s nickname]’, if dared to ‘return to Maldives’. She then proceeds to repeat the same statement.
Nasheed’s recent meeting with a senior Indian ruling party official was met with immense backlash, especially after the said official said, via twitter, that India ‘should’ invade the Maldives ‘if rigging of election takes place’.
In a previous tweet, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Subramaniam Swamy said that the former president expressed concern over incumbent President Abdulla Yameen’s intention to rig the election during a meeting in Colombo, and added that India needs ‘an action plan’.
In a tweet post revealing the meeting with Swamy, Nasheed said that they spoke on ‘the current political situation in the Maldives, upcoming presidential elections and our concerns on how President Yameen intends to rig Sept 23rd election’.
