Former Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abdulla Nawaz, joined Jumhooree Party (JP) of the ruling coalition late Tuesday.
He presented his application to JP's leader and Speaker of Parliament, Qasim Ibrahim, at a ceremony held at the party's main hub 'Kunooz'.
Nawaz was briefly appointed as Acting Commissioner of Police during former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's regime, after then Commissioner Ahmed Areef was dismissed. Areef was terminated over declaring that the police would cooperate with the Supreme Court's landmark ruling on February 1, 2018, to release political prisoners.
After Nawaz's appointment, the police arrested then Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and former top court Judge Ali Hameed, along with former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, in relation to the court order.
Nawaz was dismissed as Acting Commissioner and appointed as Deputy Minister for Environment and Energy, following Yameen's defeat in the Presidential Election in September 2018. He served as the deputy minister until the end of Yameen's term.
