MDP candidates against relinquishing tickets to Adhaalath Party

Candidates contesting the People’s Majlis election through the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have refused to relinquish tickets for coalition partner Adhaalath Party.
MDP leader Mohamed Nasheed announced on Tuesday that the party is willing to work with their coalition partner and relinquish tickets for five constituencies.
Nasheed met with members of five constituencies on Tuesday evening, although none of them had agreed to relinquish their tickets.
MDP is fielding candidates for 86 constituencies, all but one, in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
A party primary was held in mid-January and candidates on Tuesday submitted their candidacy forms to the Elections Commission.
According to MDP’s regulations, the party cannot force a member to relinquish their tickets for any reason.
