President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayyoom have said that former president Nasheed committed a huge crime and that crime is ruling as a dictator while claiming to be a champion of democracy.
He made this statement while speaking at the ceremony held last night to open the new office of PPM. President said that Nasheed assumed office portraying himself as a champion of democracy, but in fact ruled like a tyrant.
President noted some of the autocratic decisions taken by Nasheed during his tenure as President. He highlighted Nasheed’s act of kidnapping a judge and padlocking the Supreme Court. President said that PPM had to act against Nasheed because the people of Maldives could no longer tolerate the tyranny of Nasheed.
President said that even if Nasheed say that “it is not his fault that President Yameen does not have public support” there is a good response to this statement. He quoted President Obama to respond to Nasheed. President Yameen noted that, no matter how Nasheed is talking today, Nasheed arrested political opponents on bogus charges and arrested judges as well.
Some of the political opponents arrested by Nasheed include President Yameen and Qasim Ibrahim.
Speaking at tonight’s function, the President said that Maldivians will make decisions regarding the affairs of Maldives. He said that Maldives belongs to Maldivians and decisions will be taken based on how most Maldivians desires.
President also said that it was PPM that held a primary to select a presidential candidate, and even in future no party is willing to conduct a primary to select a presidential candidate.
