The recently established People’s National Congress (PNC) will hold a party conference on Friday.
The ‘Progressive Coalition’ told a press conference on Tuesday that the conference, or ‘congress’, will define PNC’s future.
PNC president, MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla, said that that the PNC and the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) are advised by former president Abdulla Yameen, and that both parties are ‘of the same ideology’.
The ‘Progressive Coalition’, name of the union between PNC and PPM, will work towards holding the current government accountable.
The parties at Tuesday conference announced ambition for presidency in 2023.
MP Raheem, who represents the Fonadhoo constituency in parliament, was one of President Yameen’s staunchest supporters.
Vilimalé MP Ahmed Nihan this month called for reform of PPM's leadership, before announcing his own resignation from the post of parliamentary group leader.
Days after this announcement, he joined the PNC.
The PNC was formed months ahead of the parliamentary election, held in April. PPM and PNC together acquired under 10 seats in the election.
