Dhuvaafaru council chief joins main opposition party MDP

Dhuvaafaru council president Ibrahim Naseer has left ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and joined Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Naseer won the council seat on PPM’s ticket in 2016 with a one-vote difference and had been a senior member of PPM and Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) before that.
He signed into the main opposition party at a Joint Opposition event on Friday night along with his wife.
Speaking at the event, Naseer said that PPM had obstructed the work of the councils but assured that he will not be afraid of President Yameen, even if his wife and kids were “chopped up and squished.”
Naseer also said that President Yameen has failed to fulfill his pledges to Dhuvaafaru including the road development in the island and that the government did not acknowledge their work to register to Dhuvaafaru.
