JSC confirms Suood removed from SC position

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on Wednesday has confirmed that Supreme Court Justice Husnu al-Suood has been officially removed from his position following his resignation on Tuesday.
JSC confirmed this in a statement it released on Wednesday, which confirmed Suood has resigned from his position effective March 4, 2025.
Suood initially sent his letter of resignation to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, but shortly after sent a second letter addressed to JSC after the commission said it would not accept Suood’s letter to the president as formal resignation. The news was reported by few local media outlets.
In his resignation letter, Suood alleged the government has been attempting to shackle the judiciary after Supreme Court held it had the jurisdiction of presiding a case challenging a constitutional amendment.
The amendment added anti-defection clauses to the Constitution, which cited parliamentarians would lose their seats in a number of ways; including if and when they switch or get dismissed from their political parties.
Suood further alleged the suspension of three Supreme Court justices was a direct attempt from the government to stop the top court’s proceedings on the case. He further pointed out to the government-sponsored bill to reduce Supreme Court judges panel, which Suood said was an attempt from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to coerce the judiciary in the executive’s favor.
Following his resignation, ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) on Wednesday released a statement sternly criticizing the outgoing apex court Justice.
The party alleged Suood’s resignation letter to President had been a political ploy.
