President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has described the forthcoming 900th anniversary of the Maldives embracing Islam, next year, is the most significant and historic milestone that this generation of Maldivians will experience. He made the remarks in his national address on the anniversary of the day the Maldives embraced Islam.
The President noted that, to commemorate this milestone, the Government is planning a series of nationwide programmes aimed at reviving Islamic and national spirit while fostering greater unity among the people.
Reflecting on the nation’s heritage, the President stated that for nine centuries, historians around the world have described Maldivians as hospitable, peace-loving, well-mannered, and generous. He added that the nation’s beauty is magnified when paired with the timeless Islamic moral values that have been deeply rooted in Maldivian society since ancient times.
Underscoring his Administration’s priorities, the President stressed that one of the Government’s foremost responsibilities is to nurture wise Maldivian citizens and ensure proper education and upbringing for children, alongside implementing infrastructural development. He also emphasised the importance of national unity, kind speech, and a deepened love for the religion.
Concluding his address, the President reaffirmed that the Government will continue to safeguard the Maldives as a strong Islamic state and as a nation committed to defending the Ummah.
The Maldives annually commemorates the day the nation embraced Islam on the 2nd of Rabiʽ al-Akhir in the Islamic calendar.
